Coney!

Before this past weekend my experience with Coney Island was limited to two distinct experiences.

1) Hearing Goodbye My Coney Island Baby as a part of a barbershop group in high school. Not so much unlike:

Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby

That man’s face at 1:06 is pretty incredible.

2) Some reality show where a Coney Island “freak” got a tattoo of a rubber chicken on his leg done by an amateur tattoo artist. It was pretty ugly. This is also how I acquired my knowledge of The Wonder Wheel and Nathan’s famous hot dogs (and infamous annual 4th-of-July hot dog eating contest). When we went this past Friday the record was 66 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Apparently that record was broken Saturday by Joey Chesnut, who ate an astonishing 68 hot dogs. (Read more…)

Hello again, fair readers!

It’s been awhile. I’d like to say that I’ve been swamped, but it’s also possible that I’ve been lazy. Or maybe I was in the middle of a move, and couldn’t post. Perhaps, it is all these things.

But now the blog is back! I’ve been contemplating a few posts, and as I have the time I will write them up. But first, let me say…

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

My strongest association with Independence Day is fireworks. And sometimes a bar-b-q. Maybe the American Flag. Today, it means time for a blog post. I guess I could write about how I learned that I loved being an American, but I’d rather talk about:

How I Learned I Loved The Internet

Why? You ask. Well, the last week has given me a lot of time for thought.

I was supposed to have internet last Monday, but due to complications with the move, my internet was installed this (Saturday) morning. A week is a LONG time to go without internet, especially when you haven’t planned for it. The simple things become hard. I couldn’t get directions or find auditions. I essentially slammed to a stop, adjusting to the pre-internet world.

So, I went to the library, got a library card, and checked out my first book in ages. Then I read it the same day. I found time to practice, and I mean practice, guitar. I went for walks in the park. I cleaned house. I called friends I hadn’t talked to in months. I visited Coney Island. I thoroughly enjoyed being freed of my internet shackles.

Since this morning I’ve done none of those things, but I’ve checked Email, The New York Times, Smashing Magazine, Actors Equity, Facebook, Playbill, Online Bill Pay, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Twitter, and this Blog! I am once again “plugged in” to the world around me. It’s awesome!

How is this possible?

The internet is at the same time beautiful and dangerous.

I wouldn’t go without it by choice, ever. But now, I hope I won’t always go with it, either.

I won’t beat you over the head with metaphor, but for Independence Day, I think it’s a nice one.

Luck and Wishes!
